How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

low costCaribbean Cruise: $180-$4,500average costAlaska Cruise: $430-$6,000high costAntarctica Cruise: $4,300-$33,000

A cruise offers an opportunity to travel to multiple destinations while only unpacking once, and wraps up the cost of lodging and meals into one prepaid package. Cost is determined by the destination, cruise line, sailing date and length of trip.

Typical costs:

  • Alaska cruises may be taken one-way for maximum onshore time or round trip. One-way costs about $430-$6,000, depending on sailing date, cruise line and stateroom choice. Seven-day roundtrip cruises cost $580-$2,660 per person, double occupancy in an interior room, depending on cruise line, stateroom choice and sailing date. Roundtrip cruises lasting 10-14 days in an interior room are priced about $1,100-$2,300 for an interior stateroom.
  • Antarctica cruises vary from 10-24 days and cost about $4,300-$20,000 for an interior room, per person, double or triple occupancy, depending on sailing date, trip length and cruise line. Upgraded rooms cost about $15,000-$33,000, depending on sailing date and cruise line. Trips on larger passenger ships typically cost less, however due to local geographic and tourism restrictions offer only on-deck views of the frozen continent without shore excursions. Smaller ships carrying about 100 passengers are typically small enough to navigate the narrow ice passages.
  • Bahamas cruises spanning three to eight days cost about $170-$1,300 per person, double occupancy, depending on trip length, sailing date and cruise line. Ocean view cabins are priced $210-$1,500, balcony rooms $325-$1,580 and suites $1,450-$4,800. Located northeast in the Pacific, five to seven-day cruises to Bermuda cost about $430-$750, per person, double occupancy in an interior room, depending on trip length, sailing date and cruise line. Upgraded rooms cost $700-$900 for an ocean view, $700-$1,200 balcony or $1,350-$2,800 for a suite. Caribbean cruises encompass the length of islands that circle southward from above Cuba down to South America and the coast region of the Gulf of Mexico. Cost to cruise in an interior room is $180-$1,800 per person, double occupancy, depending on trip length, cruise line and sailing date. Ocean view rooms are priced $400-$2,050, balcony $325-$2,200 and suites $1,200-$4,500, per person.
  • Mexico cruises vary from three to four day trips down the length of Baja California for about $230-$330 per person, double occupancy, in an interior room, or $280-$960 in an upgraded cabin, depending on sailing date, cruise line and length of trip. Cruises through the Mexican Riviera span 7-12 nights and cost about $350-$1,100 per person, double occupancy. Ocean-view cabins cost about $470-$1,250, balcony cabins $630-$1,650 and suites $1,030-$3,300, per person.
  • Hawaii cruises may be started on the US mainland or in Honolulu. Trips starting in Hawaii typically last 7-11 days and cost $1,000-$1,920 for an interior room per person, double occupancy, depending on sailing date, trip length and cruise line. Upgraded cabins cost $1,100-$2,000 per person for an ocean view, $1,520-$2,700 for a balcony or about $2,500-$5,650 for a suite, depending on cruise line. Cruises starting in Los Angeles or San Francisco cost about $1,200-$2,600 per person, double occupancy, depending on trip length, sailing date and cruise line. Upgrade to an ocean-view cabin for $1,510-$2,050, balcony $1,720-$2,655 or suite $2,500-$5,050.
  • Mediterranean cruises vary from 5-15 nights at a cost of about $550-$2,900, per person, double occupancy, for an interior room, depending on trip length, sailing date and cruise line. While embarkation points vary, ships typically start in either Spain or Italy and cruise to Greece or Turkey, time permitting. Upgraded ocean view cabins cost about $600-$3,700, balcony rooms $750-$4,875 or suites $1,400-$6,300, depending on cruise length.

What should be included:
  • All dining and most onboard entertainment is typically included.
Additional costs:
  • Alcohol policies change by ship. Typically, the smaller ships, like those traveling to Antarctica, will include beer and wine in the ticket price -- excluding fine wines, liquor or champagne. Otherwise, expect to pay about $5-$7 per beer, $6-$11 for wine and $4-$10 for cocktails. A bar bill will be delivered to the stateroom on the last evening with a 15% gratuity included.
  • Tipping may be prepaid at a slight discount. Some cruise lines automatically bill the passenger's account for a set tip amount during the cruise, either daily or on the last day. Otherwise, tipping envelopes are either left in the stateroom during the last evening or may be picked up at the purser's desk. Expect to pay about $10-$12 per person, per day.
  • Shore excursions vary by ship and destination from island nature tours to snorkeling ($30-$35), golf ($80-$250), whale watching ($70-$150) or swimming with dolphins ($80-$250).
Discounts:
  • Most cruise lines offer early booking specials which may save 10%-25% per person.
