When traveling around the globe for a substantial period of time over three months or up to even a year, you can often save money by planning the legs of your journey in advance, either by purchasing your tickets through a ticket consolidator, or buy buying a regional or around-the-world pass from an international airline.

Typical costs:
  • Ticket consolidators such as airtreks.com can put together a multi-city trip for $2,000-$3,500+. A 6-city trip through major cities such as London and Tokyo could start at $2,000 including taxes and surcharges. A 12-city tour through Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia start at $3,500.
  • Airline alliances such as One World (which includes American Airlines and British Airlines), Sky Team (which includes Continental, Northwest, Delta and Air France) and Star Alliance (which includes United, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa) offer Round the World fares. Benefits can include cost savings, flexibility in choosing dates, and flying on better-known airlines. These tickets can run from around $2,000 for a few continents in economy, to $3,500+ for a year-long travel across five or six continents. Tickets may also be available in business and first class, in which case the ticket can cost more than $10,000. You typically need to talk to a travel agent to book these tickets and get a quote for your itinerary.
  • Tip: In general, be careful about around-the-world type tickets, especially when purchased through a consolidator. These businesses have been known to close quickly. Confirm your tickets with the airlines both after purchase and at least 48 hours before each flight.
Additional costs:
  • With a regional or round-the-world ticket, there may be additional taxes or surcharges for each flight leg.
